Telangana plans aero-engine hub by 2030

HYDERABAD: Telangana will work to become India’s aero-engine hub by 2030, IT and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu said on Saturday. He was speaking at the ‘Empowering Atmanirbhar Bharat: India’s Aerospace and Defence Manufacturing Summit’ at the Indian School of Business.
He said the State government is preparing a detailed roadmap to build a globally competitive aerospace and defence ecosystem with industry and academic collaboration. Foundational steps taken by earlier Congress governments, he said, helped Telangana evolve into a defence hub and positioned it to develop an end-to-end supply chain.

The Minister said rapid geopolitical changes and supply-chain disruptions are prompting countries to seek dependable partners such as India. Telangana, he added, aims to use this shift through focused planning.
India’s defence production crossed ₹1.5 lakh crore last year, and defence exports grew 12 per cent. These indicators, he said, reflect rising trust in India’s manufacturing capability. Telangana has integrated the aerospace and defence sector into its long-term target of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047.

Telangana currently hosts more than 25 national and international aerospace and defence companies and over 1,500 MSMEs. Aerospace exports were ₹15,900 crore in 2023–24 and rose to ₹30,742 crore in the first nine months of 2024–25.
Sridhar Babu pointed to new investments expanding capacity in the State. The Tata–Safran aero-engine facility at Adibatla, built with ₹425 crore, has begun operations. The JSW Defence UAV manufacturing unit (₹800 crore) and Premier Explosives’ defence production facility (₹500 crore) are expected to be commissioned soon. Several global firms, he said, are in advanced talks to invest in Telangana.
The summit was attended by Hero Enterprises Chairman Sunil Kant Munjal, ISB Dean P. Madan, Prof. Chandan Chowdhury and senior representatives from industry and academia.
