Banjara Hills minister quarters in Hyderabad undergoing renovation
HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has sanctioned ₹76 lakh for repair and renovation of Minister’s Quarters No. 29 at Banjara Hills, recently allotted to Minority Welfare Minister Mohammad Azharuddin, triggering political criticism amid repeated claims of fiscal stress.

Funds cleared under capital outlay for government residences

According to official orders issued by the Roads and Buildings Department, the expenditure has been approved under the capital outlay for government residential buildings. The order lists comprehensive works, including waterproofing of the roof slab, floor tiling, installation of UPVC windows, a modular kitchen, wall repairs and painting to make the premises habitable.

Government cites long neglect of the building

Sources in the government said the building had remained unused for around 15 years and had deteriorated before being allotted to the minister. They maintained that the repairs were necessary to restore a long-vacant official residence to usable condition.

Opposition flags mismatch in spending priorities

The sanction has sparked debate after the order entered the public domain, with critics pointing to the government’s repeated assertions of financial constraints in meeting welfare commitments, clearing pending bills and funding development works.

Over the past two weeks, the government is reported to have cleared over ₹1 crore for renovation and sanitary works across ministers’ official residences, including about ₹30 lakh for upgrades at the Health Minister’s official bungalow.

Opposition parties said the allocations sit uneasily with public statements by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on the state’s weak finances, and cited pending welfare payments and employee dues that the government has previously acknowledged as signs of fiscal stress.
