Telangana: 38.4% families lack own houses

HYDERABAD: Around 38.4% of families in the state do not own a house, according to a recent survey. Scheduled Tribes (STs), Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Backward Classes (BCs) remain significantly behind in access to basic amenities.
While Other Castes (OCs) and BC-C groups report relatively fewer issues, a larger share of these communities lives in rented accommodation.
SC, ST households face housing constraints
Among communities without own houses, Muslims account for 60% and OCs for 50%. In contrast, STs (72%) and BC-D groups (70.3%) largely reside in owned houses.
About 24% of families live in single-room houses. This includes 30.6% of SC families and 34% of ST families.
Water access gaps remain significant
Around 23.3% of households lack drinking water connections. Of these, 5.8% have no access at all. The share includes 11.1% STs, 8.2% SCs, 4.8% BCs and 3.9% OCs.
About 32% of affected households belong to ST communities. Nearly 9.4% of families depend on public taps, with SC and ST households accounting for 12% within this segment.
Toilets, electricity and fuel access uneven
Around 13.4% of families do not have individual toilets. The proportion is higher among STs (32%) and SCs (18.4%), while other groups report lower levels.
About 8% of families do not have access to LPG. This includes 15.7% STs, 9.7% SCs, 6.8% BCs and 5.7% OCs.
Nearly 5.4% of households continue to rely on firewood for cooking. The share stands at 13.2% among STs, 6.9% among SCs, 4.5% among BCs and 2.5% among OCs.
