Why 36 Telangana junior lecturers face dismissal
Telangana : The Telangana Intermediate Education Department has started action against 36 junior lecturers who allegedly secured government jobs using fake postgraduate certificates.
Intermediate regional joint directors have issued show-cause notices to the lecturers as part of the process to remove them from service. They have been asked to explain within seven days why they should not be dismissed under the rules.
If they fail to respond within the deadline, officials are preparing to dismiss them and initiate forgery and criminal cases, according to officials.
The issue came to light during the second phase of certificate verification undertaken after the regularisation of around 3,300 contract lecturers who had been working before 2014. The lecturers were regularised in 2023 during the previous BRS government.
Officials verify certificates from universities in four states
As part of the verification, officials examined certificates of around 600 lecturers who said they had studied at nearly 16 universities in other states. The group included lecturers who had pursued regular as well as distance-mode courses.
To establish whether the postgraduate certificates were genuine, Intermediate Board officials sent the details to the respective universities for verification.
In the first phase of the exercise, officials found that 36 people had secured jobs using fake certificates. Show-cause notices were subsequently issued to them.
Officials said the details of another 100 people could not be traced so far. Their records have been marked as “not found”, and notices are likely to be issued to them as well.
Doubts over certificates surfaced during regularisation
Questions had been raised about some certificates from the time the contract lecturers were regularised. Officials found that some lecturers had submitted postgraduate degrees purportedly issued by universities in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Haryana and other states.
Verification requests sent to universities including Lalit Narayan Mithila University and Magadh University in Bihar, Ranchi University in Jharkhand and the University of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh brought the discrepancies to light.
