Telangana records 16% monsoon rainfall deficit; 17 districts remain rain-deficient
HYDERABAD: Despite the southwest monsoon advancing across Telangana, 17 of the state’s 33 districts continued to report deficient or large deficient rainfall between June 1 and June 25, according to district-wise rainfall data released by the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS).
The state received 88.3 mm of rainfall during the period against the normal 105.4 mm, resulting in a cumulative deficit of 16%. However, Telangana’s overall seasonal rainfall status continues to be classified as “normal”.
Only three districts — Rangareddy, Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool — recorded excess cumulative rainfall during the season so far.
Rangareddy received 131.6 mm of rainfall against the normal 82.7 mm, registering a 59% surplus. Nalgonda recorded 97.4 mm against the normal 74.2 mm, while Nagarkurnool received 92.3 mm compared with the normal 71.7 mm, recording surpluses of 31% and 29%, respectively.
Hyderabad records 12% excess seasonal rainfall
Thirteen districts fell in the normal rainfall category. Hyderabad received 102.2 mm of rainfall against its seasonal normal of 90.9 mm, recording 12% excess rainfall.
Other districts in the normal category were Mahbubnagar, Mulugu, Suryapet, Sangareddy, Khammam, Vikarabad, Narayanpet, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Wanaparthy and Medak.
Siddipet and Hanamkonda reported large deficient rainfall, with deficits of 62% and 76%, respectively. Warangal was close to entering the same category, recording a 59% deficit.
Other districts that reported deficient rainfall included Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Mahabubabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rajanna Sircilla, Kamareddy, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial and Jogulamba Gadwal.
Uneven monsoon distribution across Telangana
On June 25, Nirmal recorded the state’s highest daily rainfall at 22.9 mm, nearly five times its normal rainfall of 4.5 mm.
Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Medak and Suryapet received above-normal rainfall during the day. Several districts, including Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Mulugu and Peddapalli, recorded little or no rainfall.
The data also highlighted uneven monsoon distribution across the state. Nalgonda recorded the highest number of rainy days this season with 13, followed by Rangareddy with 12. Nirmal and Suryapet reported 11 rainy days each.
Hanamkonda recorded only three rainy days since June 1, the lowest in Telangana, while Jogulamba Gadwal reported four rainy days during the period.
