Tarnaka junction reopens nearly a decade later, trial phase begins April 18

Hyderabad: Almost a decade later, the commuters can use the Tarnaka junction as it is being reopened for vehicular traffic. Issuing a traffic advisory, Hyderabad Traffic Police said the old junction is being reopened on a trial basis starting from April 18 to May 2, 2025.
The reopening of the junction will make it accessible for traffic moving between Osmania University and Lalapet. Vehicular traffic from Osmania University will be allowed to proceed straight towards Lalapet and take a right turn towards Habsiguda.
Similarly, vehicles from Lalapet can move straight towards Osmania University and turn right towards Mettuguda, according to the advisory issued by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Joel Davis.
The advisory also noted that vehicles approaching from Mettuguda will not be permitted to turn right towards Osmania University. The traffic flow must proceed towards HUDA Complex, take a U-turn, and then turn left at Tarnaka to reach Osmania University.
Similar turn restrictions will also remain in place for vehicles coming from Habsiguda. They will not be allowed to turn right towards Lalapet. Instead, they must proceed towards IRISET, take a U-turn, and then turn left at Tarnaka to reach Lalapet.
During the trial phase, the traffic police will assess the feasibility of managing traffic flow through the junction. The public has been requested to take note of the route changes and cooperate with the traffic police personnel.
Tarnaka main junction has remained closed to the public for nearly a decade and vehicular traffic had to take a U-turn to reach the other side of the junction.
The local residents had been complaining about the lengthy detour and the chaos at the U-turns. Following frequent representations made by locals, the GHMC deputy mayor and Tarnaka corporator Mothe Srilatha Shobhan Reddy had taken up the matter with the GHMC Commissioner and Hyderabad police commissioner and finally, the authorities have decided to reopen the cross roads for traffic movement.
