Children’s Day Spotlight: Taniya Begum, 13-year-old changing lives through anti-drug awareness

Hyderabad: On this Children’s Day, we shine a spotlight on an inspiring young leader, Taniya Begum, a 13-year-old girl from Hyderabad who is making a significant impact in the fight against drug addiction. Through her activism, Taniya is not only raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse but also empowering her peers to build a healthier, drug-free future.

Taniya’s journey into activism began at the age of five, when, instead of focusing on childhood play, she found herself drawn to news reports detailing the devastating effects of drugs on individuals and communities. Her early exposure to these stories ignited a passion to take action, and she vowed to help others understand the risks of drug abuse.

Inspired by her father, Shaik Salauddin, a well-known social activist, Taniya quickly realized the power of social change. Observing her father’s work in the community fueled her determination to make a difference, and by the time she reached Class 8 at All Saints High School, Taniya was already a recognized figure in the anti-drug movement.

Junior Ambassador for Drug-Free World India

At just 13, Taniya was appointed as the Junior Ambassador for Drug-Free World India. In this capacity, she has led numerous campaigns aimed at educating young people about the dangers of drug addiction. Through her efforts, Taniya has distributed over 65,000 educational booklets titled The Truth About Drugs, explaining the harmful effects of drugs and offering resources for those at risk.

Her approach to activism is personal and direct. Speaking candidly about her mission, Taniya said, “Drugs destroy lives. It’s not just the addict who suffers; it’s everyone around them.” Her ability to connect with young audiences has made her an effective spokesperson for the cause.

She regularly visits schools and colleges across Hyderabad, engaging with students through talks and activities designed to educate them on the dangers of drug abuse. Her campaigns are comprehensive, featuring the distribution of thousands of educational booklets and organizing events that highlight the importance of making healthy choices.

Taniya’s Impact Across Multiple Causes

In addition to her work on drug addiction, Taniya is also deeply involved in other social causes. She is passionate about environmental conservation through her Hara Hai Toh Bhara Hai campaign, which encourages water conservation and environmental preservation. Another initiative, Selfie with Helmet, Papa, aims to raise awareness about road safety, particularly the importance of wearing helmets while riding motorcycles.
