TAL hosts Sankranti celebrations in London, draws over 700 Telugu attendees

LONDON: Sankranti celebrations organised by the Telugu Association of London (TAL) were held on January 18, drawing more than 700 Telugu people from London and nearby areas.

The event brought together families and community members to mark the harvest festival through traditional customs and cultural activities. Participants took part in Bommala Koluvu, Bhogi Pallu, rangoli competitions, cooking contests and kite-making events, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the day.

Redbridge Mayor Beverley Brewer, the chief guest, praised TAL’s commitment to community service and cultural integration. She appreciated the association’s efforts in bringing diverse traditions onto a single platform and stressed the importance of young people recognising their cultural roots and carrying them forward. She also commended TAL for connecting the younger generation with Telugu culture and keeping it relevant.

The event was organised by TAL women members Uma Geervani, Hima Bindu, Surekha, Swapna B, Swapna G, Shalini, Jyotsna and Shazma, with support from Giridhar, Roy B, Vijay B and Anil Ananthula. Fundraising was led by trustees Venkat Neela and Ravi Kumar Reddy Mocherla, along with treasurer Anil Ananthula. The organisers thanked sponsors for their support.

Chairman Ravi Sabba expressed gratitude to parents, members and volunteers for their continued support of TAL initiatives. Trustee Ashok Madishetti spoke about the training programmes offered by the TAL Cultural Centre, including classes in dance, music and language, aimed at helping people of all ages connect with Telugu heritage. He said convenor Vasu Mayreddy invited the community to attend the TAL Ugadi 2026 celebrations scheduled for March 21.

Giridhar Putlur thanked volunteers, including Murali K, Vijay B, Naga G, Ravi D, Wajid, Kranthi R and Sri Ram, for their efforts in organising the event. Trustees Anil Ananthula, Ravi Kumar Reddy Mocherla, Sreedevi Aleddula, Venkat Neela, Ashok Madishetti, Kiran Kappeta and Satya Peddireddi also supported the programme.

The celebrations showcased traditions from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, featuring songs, dance performances and traditional cuisine.
