Swiggy 2024 report: Hyderabad’s biryani obsession & Secunderabad Junction food surge

Hyderabad: Biryani remains the standout dish in Hyderabad’s culinary landscape, as the city has ordered an impressive 1.57 crore biryanis this year, according to Swiggy’s annual food trends report released on Tuesday, December 24, 2024.

The findings indicate that residents of Hyderabad ordered an average of 34 biryanis per minute, solidifying its status as the city’s most favored dish. Chicken biryani was at the forefront, with a staggering 97.21 lakh plates ordered throughout the year.

Hyderabad’s passion for biryani reached new heights during the T20 Cricket World Cup when the city ordered over 8.69 lakh chicken biryanis. A single food lover in Hyderabad even splurged ₹18,840 on 60 biryanis in one go. Alongside biryani, other popular dishes included chicken shawarmas, chicken rolls, and chicken nuggets, with dosa also claiming the top spot for breakfast orders, especially the onion dosa.

Vijayawada: A Railway Station Surprises with High Orders

Vijayawada Junction emerged as the leading railway station for food orders, with passengers ordering large quantities of food, including many chicken biryanis. Popular station orders also included South Indian staples like masala dosa, veg biryani, and special thalis. At Nellore, biryani and other South Indian dishes were in demand, while Secunderabad Junction saw a blend of paneer butter masala and tandoori roti orders. Kanpur Central favored North Indian dishes, including jeera rice and special thalis.

Swiggy’s Incognito Mode saw a surge in secret orders, with 3.5 lakh placed in just three months. Bengaluru topped the list with 54,064 orders, followed closely by Hyderabad and Mumbai. Chicken biryani emerged as the top-secret indulgence, with nearly 25,000 discreet orders.

Food Trends Across India: A Shift Toward Regional Favorites

While biryani reigned as the top dish in Hyderabad, other cities also saw distinct preferences. Dosa, especially the masala dosa, proved to be a nationwide favorite, with 23 million orders in 2024. Bengaluru led the dosa orders with 2.5 million, while Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata favored their local dishes like chole, aloo parantha, and kachori.

Dinner proved to be the most ordered meal of the day, with 215 million orders, nearly 29% higher than lunch. Breakfast also remained crucial, with 8.5 million dosas and 7.8 million idlis ordered across the country.

Midnight Cravings: Chicken Rolls and Burgers Dominate Late-Night Orders

When it comes to midnight snacks, chicken rolls topped the list with 2.48 million orders in 2024. Other late-night favorites included chicken momos (1.63 million orders) and chicken burgers (1.84 million orders between midnight and 2 AM), making chicken the undisputed star of late-night cravings.

Swiggy Bolt: Speedy Deliveries for the Win

Swiggy introduced a new feature, Swiggy Bolt, which made deliveries faster than ever. The service set a record with a 3-minute delivery time. Whether it was burgers in Nashik, ice cream in Mumbai, or Belgium Butterscotch Cake in Hyderabad, Swiggy Bolt ensured food was delivered quickly and efficiently.

Swiggy Dineout: Dining Out in Style

Swiggy Dineout saw significant growth in 2024, with 22 million diners using the service. The feature helped diners save ₹533 crore through table reservations and deals. Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune were the top cities for Swiggy Dineout, while cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh also saw an increase in usage.
