Former sarpanches protest pending bills, JAC leader held in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri

HYDERABAD: Police took Survi Yadaiah Goud, the founding State President of the Sarpanches’ Association Joint Action Committee (JAC), into custody early Tuesday morning at his home in Narayanpur Mandal, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district. The arrest stopped him from leading a delegation to meet Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
The arrest angered many former village saranches. For 31 months, they have waited for the government to clear their pending bills. Inspired by recent remarks from Revanth Reddy at a farmers’ meeting, Yadaiah and other JAC members planned to meet the Chief Minister to request payment of these dues. At the meeting, Revanth Reddy reportedly said, โFormer Sarpanches are talking about laying siege to my house, why do that? If they come to my home, I will offer them tea and snacks.โ
The committee members took the Chief Minister at his word and decided to visit his house on Tuesday. However, police arrived outside their homes early in the morning and stopped them from leaving. Yadaiah said, โWe were placed under house arrest and detained. What kind of people’s government is this? It is wrong for the Chief Minister to go back on his words.โ

Meanwhile, many former Sarpanches face severe financial problems since their terms ended. Some borrowed money for village projects during the previous KCRโs BRS government. As interest piles up, a few have even taken their own lives.Yadaiah said, โFor 31 months, we have begged for our bill payments. It is wrong to hold back our dues and treat us this way.โ
Nearly six months have passed since new Sarpanches took office. Still, the State Finance Commission has not released any money to Gram Panchayats. About Rs 350 crore remains unpaid to former Sarpanches.
โIf the government releases these funds, all our outstanding bills will be paid,โ said Yadaiah. Following the arrest, the association harshly criticized the governmentโs actions. Members accused the government of double standards. โWith these arrests and strong-arm tactics, people now see this as a government of sins, not a people’s government,โ Goud said, appealing directly to the Chief Minister.
He urged Revanth Reddy to recognize how serious the situation is. Yadaiah asked the Chief Minister to keep his promises and pay the outstanding bills. The JAC called for immediate action to help former village heads. Their families continue to suffer because of unpaid dues and growing debts.
