Students request extra RTC buses

Hyderabad: Over a thousand students in Ibrahimpatnam are facing severe commuting challenges due to insufficient RTC buses during peak college hours. The shortage of buses is forcing students to travel under hazardous conditions, with some girls standing on footpaths and boys hanging from buses.

While speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Nani, a student from Gurunanak College in Ibrahimpatnam, shared his concerns, saying, “There are more than ten engineering colleges in the area, including Gurunanak College. The current number of buses is inadequate to handle the surge in student commuters. Due to the lack of buses, students are forced to travel by standing on footboards, and girls are subjected to unsafe conditions as well.”

Nani said that despite numerous complaints to TGSRTC via ‘X,’ previously known as Twitter, there has been no resolution. “We are repeatedly told that additional buses will be provided, but nothing changes. It seems that the primary reason for this neglect is that many of the commuters are students with bus passes or women with free tickets.”

The problem has been ongoing even before the introduction of the free bus scheme for women. “The situation has persisted for a long time, and every day, students experience severe overcrowding on buses, especially routes like 277D, 279, and 277L,” Nani added. “The buses are packed to the extent that students are forced to footboard, creating a dangerous commute.”

Despite multiple complaints addressing this issue, TGSRTC has yet to take significant action. Nani has appealed to TGSRTC staff and VC Sajjanar, the managing director of TGSRTC, to intervene and address the shortage of buses. “We need immediate action to ensure students can travel safely without having to risk their lives by standing on footboards or hanging from buses.”

Nani also took to ‘X’ to highlight the issue, “The daily situation of TGSRTC buses from LB Nagar to Ibrahimpatnam (Guru Nanak Institute of Technology) is dire. Students are traveling dangerously due to the insufficient number of buses during peak hours. We kindly request @SajjanarVC and @tgsrtcmdoffice to increase the number of buses.”

In response, Bruce Wayne, an ‘X’ user, commented, “No matter how much you try, nobody seems to care. They are intentionally limiting the number of buses during college timings because all the students use bus passes. It seems like they are doing this deliberately.”

Students are calling for immediate intervention to provide additional RTC buses in Ibrahimpatnam, ensuring their safety and reliable transportation during peak college hours.
