HYDERABAD: Stormwater drain widening works at Ameerpet caused severe traffic congestion on the busy SR Nagar–Mythrivanam stretch on Monday, with commuters facing long delays as a significant portion of the road remained blocked.

The works are being carried out beside Swarna Jayanti Complex in Ameerpet, which houses the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) head office. More than 40 per cent of the road stretch was occupied for excavation and widening activities, slowing vehicle movement and resulting in traffic jams for nearly three hours.

Motorists travelling through Ameerpet and adjoining areas reported slow-moving traffic as vehicles navigated the narrowed carriageway.

Drain widening to improve water flow

According to Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials, the ongoing project is intended to improve the flow of stormwater and reduce the risk of flooding during the monsoon season.

“Widening works on the existing stormwater drain have been taken up to ensure smooth flow of drainage water and prevent overflow in the coming monsoon. We completed similar work on the opposite side of this site a few months ago. We will complete the work in a week or two,” a GHMC engineering official said.

Safety measures in place

The official said the excavation area has been barricaded and warning signboards installed to alert motorists and pedestrians.

Traffic movement is expected to remain affected until the completion of the widening works, officials said.
