HYDERABAD: St. Francis College for Women, Begumpet, marked World Photography Day with ‘Chitranjan 2026’, a programme celebrating photography, creativity and visual storytelling.

The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism organised the programme through its student club Communis on August 19.

Fine art photographer and former president of the Telangana Photographic Society, Sathyaprasad Yachendra, was the chief guest and resource person.

College principal Prof. T. Uma Joseph highlighted photography as a medium that goes beyond capturing images. She said it encouraged people to pause, observe carefully and appreciate details that could otherwise go unnoticed.

Photographer’s eye can reveal stories hidden in landscapes

Drawing from her perspective as a historian, Joseph said photographs provide glimpses into worlds that no longer exist. They can also reveal the social conventions, hierarchies and relationships of a particular period.

Speaking about the theme of the programme, she said landscape photography could bring out stories hidden within scenery. She urged students to develop a “photographer’s eye” to notice visual details and understand the stories behind them.

Yachendra delivered a lecture on ‘Exploring the Nuances of Landscape Photography’. He spoke about the significance of August 19 and photography as a form of expression.

His presentation featured a series of photographs titled ‘The Silence of Light’. The photographs showcased Himalayan landscapes, lakes in Ladakh and rainbows.

The session concluded with students asking technical and experience-based questions. Yachendra shared insights into the artistic aspects of capturing photographs.

Intercollegiate contest draws more than 40 participants

The programme also featured an intercollegiate photography contest, a photo exhibition, a camera and equipment display, and stalls showcasing aspects of photography.

The contest, themed ‘Home’, attracted more than 40 participants from across the country. Participants presented different perspectives and interpretations of the theme.

The programme provided students and photography enthusiasts an opportunity to learn, interact and engage with photography and visual storytelling.
