Speaker dismisses defection pleas against five Telangana MLAs

Telangana: Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Rao on December 17 dismissed disqualification petitions filed against five MLAs, invoking powers under the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

Hearing completed, merit examined

According to an official press note issued by V. Narasimha Charyulu, Secretary to the Telangana State Legislature, the Speaker examined the petitions, evaluated the material placed on record and granted adequate opportunity of hearing to all concerned parties, in adherence to the principles of natural justice.

Petitions rejected

Acting as Chairman of the Tribunal under Paragraph 6 of the Tenth Schedule, and in accordance with the Telangana Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1986, the Speaker dismissed the following petitions:

  • K.P. Vivekanand vs Tellam Venkata Rao (D.P. No. 2 of 2024)

  • Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and another vs Bandla Krishnamohan Reddy (D.P. No. 6 of 2024)

  • Kalvakuntla Sanjay vs T. Prakash Goud (D.P. No. 7 of 2024)

  • Chinta Prabhakar vs Gudam Mahipal Reddy (D.P. No. 9 of 2024)

  • Kalvakuntla Sanjay vs Arekapudi Gandhi (D.P. No. 11 of 2024)

The petitions sought disqualification of the MLAs on the ground that they had voluntarily given up membership of their political party. After considering the merits of each case, the Speaker dismissed all five petitions.
