SLBC tunnel collapse: Rescuers recover one body from the debris

Hyderabad: As the rescue operation entered its 16th day on Sunday, one body has been recovered from the rubble inside the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Nagarkurnool.
The rescue officials said they could see only a hand as the body was found stuck in a machine. The rescuers are currently cutting the machine to retrieve the stuck body, they added. Later, they managed to retrieve the body from the debris.
A couple of days ago, the rescue teams had deployed the cadaver dogs sent by the Kerala government. Telangana minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said that these dogs have detected a strong odour at a specific location near the incident site in the partially collapsed tunnel.
The Kerala police’s Belgian Malinois breed dogs have possibly suspected the presence of three individuals at the location.
On Saturday, the minister described the tunnel incident as a national disaster. He asserted that the state government is deploying advanced global technology to overcome the obstacles inside the partially collapsed tunnel. He also announced that robotic technology has been brought in to speed up the rescue operations to locate the trapped workers.
Over 500 rescuers drawn from Army, Navy, NDRF, SDRF, Singareni Mines Rescue, Fire Services, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), HYDRAA, South Central Railway plasma cutters, and Rat Miners have been working round the clock to help trace and locate the eight trapped workers.
Two workers were injured and eight others trapped when a portion of the tunnel roof collapsed on February 22 at the 14th km point inside the tunnel. Among them, two are engineers, two are operators and the remaining four are labourers.
The trapped workers, employed by Jaiprakash Associates, have been identified as Manoj Kumar (UP), Sri Niwas (UP), Sunny Singh (J&K), Gurpreet Singh (Punjab) and Sandeep Sahu, Jegta Xess, Santosh Sahu and Anuj Sahau, all from Jharkhand.
