Sircilla handloom artist weaves Vasavi history on silk

Hairkala Cloathing

RAJANNA: Sircilla handloom artist Veldi Hariprasad has woven a silk sari depicting the history of Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari, completing the work after 45 days of effort.

The sari was commissioned by Ratnakumari-Koteswara Rao of Guntur. Hariprasad used silk threads and gold zari on a traditional handloom to depict the history of Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari.

Sari carries names of 102 rishis, 102 gotras

The seven-metre-long sari is 45 inches wide and weighs 1,200 grams, according to the source copy. It features the names of 102 rishis and 102 gotras, along with 25 historical images depicting the history of Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari.

Hariprasad incorporated the names, gotras and images into the fabric using silk threads, combining weaving techniques with detailed visual representations.

Weaver is known for experimental handloom work

Hariprasad has previously undertaken several experiments on the handloom. He recently wove a sari that could fit inside a matchbox in 170 minutes, demonstrating his speed and precision.

Weaving a sari is itself a specialised craft, but incorporating historical images, gotra names and the names of rishis into handloom designs requires a different level of precision and planning.

The latest sari combines religious themes, historical imagery and handloom techniques, making it a distinctive piece of textile art.
