Sinkhole forms on main road in Miyapur; Repairs ongoing

Miyapur sinkhole road repairs

Hyderabad: A sudden road collapse at Deepthisree Nagar in Miyapur of Hyderabad, led to the formation of a significant sinkhole around 3 p.m. on Friday, September 13, 2024. Repair work is currently ongoing at the site.

Motorists experienced panic when a large pothole appeared on the main road, prompting immediate action from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials. The traffic police swiftly halted vehicular movement and diverted traffic to alternative routes to prevent accidents. Initial investigations suggested that a previously laid pipeline might have caved in, contributing to the collapse.

The road, a crucial route connecting Madinaguda Shanti Nagar Colony to Managar, Prashantnagar, JPNR, and Bollaram, is heavily trafficked and serves numerous schools in the vicinity. However, a major disaster was averted as the sinkhole was discovered before school dismissal, potentially avoiding harm to schoolchildren and their transport vehicles.

Authorities suspect that a burst nala pipeline adjacent to the road may have caused the sinkhole by weakening the ground beneath due to water leakage.

In the aftermath of the incident, some citizens are demanding accountability, questioning who should be held responsible for such infrastructure failures. They are urging government departments and officials to address the issue of accountability and transparency regarding road maintenance and safety.

Earlier, it was reported that a large pothole had formed in the middle of the road near Azmath Nagar, SRT Colony, Yakutpura, posing a serious threat to the safety of residents and commuters.

Additionally, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials have issued warnings about opening manholes in the city’s roads and other areas. The Water Board is implementing preventive measures to avoid accidents.

It is important to note that under the HMWSSB Act – 1989, Section 74, it is an offense for any citizen or unauthorised person to open or remove manhole lids without permission from the authorities.

Violators may face criminal charges, fines, and potential imprisonment. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has stated that strict action will be taken against those who engage in such activities. Any issues with manhole covers, including damage or open lids, should be reported by calling the Water Board’s complaint number, 155313.
