Singur dam to offer crocodile cruise on Manjeera river

SANGAREDDY: A new eco-tourism project is coming up along the Manjeera river between Singur and Manjeera dams in Sangareddy district, promising visitors a cruise experience amid crocodiles and migratory birds.
The Telangana Forest Development Corporation (TFDC) has initiated plans to develop a river cruise service through the Manjeera Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its rich biodiversity. The 20-km stretch of the river connecting the two dams flows perennially and contains nine small islands that shelter nearly 400 crocodiles and numerous bird species.
Cruise route through nine river islands
Officials said the plan includes transferring 13 acres of land under the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to the TFDC. Once the transfer is complete, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared to develop facilities such as a boating entry plaza, eco-cottages, and an environmental education centre. The centre will also be used for tourism awareness and training programmes.
A special viewing platform will be built along the flood canal embankment for visitors to observe crocodiles safely.
Watchtowers, bird trails and eco-guides planned
Authorities plan to set up a watchtower equipped with telescopes and binoculars for birdwatching. Guided tours will be organised with the help of trained naturalists to enhance visitor experience and promote awareness about bird conservation and river ecology.
At least five naturalists will be appointed to educate tourists about the sanctuary’s flora and fauna. The initiative aims to combine adventure and environmental awareness while generating livelihood opportunities for local youth.
River widening for safe cruise navigation
In some sections of the river, where narrow bends could obstruct cruise movement, the TFDC plans to widen the channel. For those who do not wish to take the cruise, special viewing decks will be created to observe crocodiles and birds from the shore.
