Shamirpet lake to get recreational fishing spot

Hyderabad: People who live in Hyderabad’s urban area travel to far off places to fish for recreation. If the proposal to establish a recreational fishing spot is set in motion, this is set to change. The Telangana Fisheries department is developing a fishing spot at Shamirpet lake in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, which is a popular hangout location for the city residents. This would be a first-of-its-kind facility in Hyderabad outskirts.
Once the fishing spot is set up, the people can take part in activities such as recreational fishing and boat rides in the designated spots for catching fishes in the lake. The fishing enclosure will provide you fishing rods and nets for catching fishes in the designated zones.
Once transformed into a tourist destination, the lake will feature eating joints where you can enjoy delicious local and exotic fish curries while enjoying quality time with friends and family.
At a recent coordination meeting held by Sabyasachi Ghosh, Special Chief Secretary of the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries department, a decision was made to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the fishing project. This project will also create employment opportunities for local fishermen.
The growing recreational fishing across the globe is achieving a 5 percent annual growth rate in the tourism sector. The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) has decided to launch this project in India. The central government sanctioned Rs. 2 crore for the fishing project after the Telangana government expressed its interest in developing a recreational fishing spot at Shamirpet lake.
The Shamirpet lake spread across 523 acres is located just 30 kilometers from Hyderabad which makes it ideal for tourism and environmental activities. The officials are waiting for the DPR approval by the Central government. They are expecting to begin work on recreational fishing spit within six months.
Meanwhile, the Fisheries department and National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) has proposed to hold a ‘Fish Festival 2025’ on Necklace Road in February or March 2025 in order to promote fish consumption and encourage value-added products among people.
