Students of Shamirpet Gurukul walking to police station over food and hostel sanitation complaints

HYDERABAD: Alleging poor food and unsafe living conditions, students of three boys’ Gurukul schools in Shamirpet walked nearly two kilometres to the Shamirpet police station on Thursday, creating a stir.

The schools, set up for students from Quthbullapur, Hyderabad and Charminar areas, house about 1,200 boys. Fifty students left the campus in the morning and reached the police station to report their problems.

“Worms are coming in the rice. They pour water into the dal. The menu is not followed. If we question, they beat us. We are living in fear in a crumbling building,” the students told inspector Srinath.

Officials review hostel facilities after students protest

The inspector heard them patiently and alerted officials of relevant departments. Police later escorted the students back to the campus.

Students flag food, water and sanitation lapses

Medchal–Malkajgiri district BC Welfare Officer Jhansi Rani, Civil Supplies Officer Srinivas Reddy and Revenue officials rushed to the Gurukul and inspected the facilities. They interacted with students individually and collected written complaints. “Worms are appearing in the food. Drinking water is a problem. Toilets are in poor condition,” the students told them.

Committees formed; action promised ahead of Class 10 exams

Addressing a press meet, Jhansi Rani said no worms were found in the rice currently in stock, but officials would act on students’ concerns. “We have set up mess, food and sanitation committees with teachers and students. They will report issues to officials regularly,” she said.

With Class 10 exams approaching, additional facilities would be arranged to ensure students do not face any difficulty, she added.
