Shaikpet sewer overflow issue resurfaces ahead of Bonalu 2026
HYDERABAD: Residents of Vinayak Nagar in Shaikpet want the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to fix a long-standing sewer overflow problem. This issue has troubled the neighborhood for more than ten years. People say the problem will get worse during the upcoming Bonalu festival.
Maryala Ajay Kumar, a resident, wrote to HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy about the problem. He said overflowing sewage in Division 84, Golconda GM 14, Shaikpet, has caused problems for 10 to 12 years. Many people have complained to several HMWSSB officials, but nothing has changed.
Ajay Kumar told HyderabadMail that the HMWSSB Managing Director approved Rs 42 lakhs in 2024 for new sewer lines. Workers finished three out of four projects. Officials did not complete the last project, which costs Rs 23 lakhs. Instead, officials used a temporary fix that has not worked. Sewage now overflows even more in the area from Gowraiah plot to Amma Hospital. This situation makes life hard for residents.
The problem gets worse during the Bonalu festival, which happens every two years. This year, it will be held in 2026. Last time, women carried the holy bonam barefoot through sewage water. The situation was unpleasant and unsafe. Many families, including the complainant’s, suffered through this hardship.
The complainant said he told several officials about the issue, but nothing changed.Residents recently spoke to Project Director Sudhershan and GM Arun Kumar, who promised to start work. But the work has not started. Sewage overflow has started again in the last three days, making the situation urgent.
Residents want the Managing Director to start the approved project worth Rs 23 lakhs along the Shaikpet-Manikonda road. This project would give a permanent solution by moving the sewer load.
Residents worry the overflowing sewage will cause health risks and spoil the Bonalu festival, which is two days away. Residents have asked officials to make this project a priority and save the community from more problems.
