Sewage water stagnates near school in Shaikpet, 500 residents affected
HYDERABAD: More than 500 residents of Siddhi Vinayak Nagar in Shaikpet are facing a growing public health crisis. Stagnant sewage water has been pooling near a school for the last two weeks. Repeated complaints to civic authorities, including Cyberabad Municipal Corporation(CMC) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board (HMWS&SB), have brought no relief.
Speaking to HyderabadMail, Nagesh, president of the Siddhi Vinayak Nagar Residents Association, said the problem began about 15 days a,go when drainage work started in the area. Since then, it has turned into a persistent civic nightmare with no solution in sight.
“It is absolutely disgusting, so much filth,” Nagesh said, describing the stagnant water next to the school. He explained that sewage runoff from the higher-elevation Vinobha Nagar colony flows through Siddhi Vinayak Nagar before reaching the main road.
Additionally, the presence of a school nearby makes the situation worse. “Children going to school are facing a lot of trouble. There’s filth and mosquitoes everywhere. It’s hard for children to even pass by,” said Nagesh.
Moreover, residents say they have complained repeatedly for two weeks, but authorities only offer verbal assurances. Nagesh said the Manager, HMWS&SB visited the site and inspected the situation, but kept promising, “The vehicle will come tomorrow, which didn’t happen till now,” said Nagesh.
In addition, residents say this pattern repeats with several officials. When Nagesh followed up with the work inspector, the official said he was sick. “No matter how many times we complain, no one comes,” Nagesh said. The affected area has about 100 houses with an estimated 500 residents. They live with stagnant sewage, foul smells, mosquito breeding, and unhygienic conditions. Nagesh explained that runoff from the higher Vinobha Nagar colony drains into Siddhi Vinayak Nagar. The recent drainage work was supposed to fix this, but it has not helped.
Nagesh said he has formally complained to all relevant civic authorities, including HMWSSB. He is frustrated at the gap between official promises and action. Children, women, and elderly residents are bearing the brunt of this delay.
After more than two weeks with no progress, residents of Siddhi Vinayak Nagar are now calling on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to send the promised cleaning vehicle. They also want permanent drainage repairs before the monsoon makes things worse.
