Historic Shaikpet Sarai in Hyderabad set for Rs. 12 crore revamp
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has initiated a tender process for the redevelopment of the historically significant Shaikpet Sarai. The estimated cost of the project exceeds Rs. 12 crores.
The neglected Shaikpet Sarai, which dates back to the 17th century, is scheduled for extensive restoration. The plan includes the construction of a compound wall, restrooms, and a parking area for the site.
Located near Golconda in Hyderabad, Shaikpet Sarai was built by Abdullah Qutb Shah in the 17th century to accommodate travelers heading to Golconda and Bidar. Originally designed to host up to 500 people, the sarai included stables, a mosque, and a tomb of an unknown Sufi saint. Today, the once-grand structure has fallen into disrepair and is in urgent need of restoration.
The restoration of Shaikpet Sarai aims to preserve this important heritage site and enhance its cultural value for future generations.
Former Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Metropolitan Commissioner Arvind Kumar had previously announced on ‘X’ in December 2022 that the restoration project would involve adaptive reuse of the 17th-century Qutb Shahi structure. The project will be carried out under the aegis of HMDA, in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and the National Institute of Urban Management (NIUM). Kumar highlighted the Sarai’s historical significance, noting that it features 29 rooms, stables for camels and horses, a tomb, and a mosque.
