Flooded street in Shaikpet OU Colony Hyderabad after heavy rain

SHAIKPET: The flooding problem has resurfaced in OU Colony at Shaikpet. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials’ attempt to link the stormwater pipeline outlet to a chamber in neighbouring Manikonda municipality has failed to resolve the issue.

Due to heavy rain, waist-deep water entered several houses in the low-lying parts of the colony, forcing residents to remain awake through the night.

GHMC constructed a 900 mm diameter stormwater pipeline to drain rainwater. It was meant to be connected to the Manikonda municipality line near Dream Valley. However, Manikonda officials initially objected, leading GHMC to leave the pipeline incomplete. Recently, with the intervention of the Hyderabad commissioner, the work was completed.

But the Manikonda pipeline has only 300 mm capacity, which is insufficient to handle the outflow from OU Colony’s 900 mm line. As a result, waterlogging continues in the low-lying areas.

GHMC officials inspected the situation on Monday and decided to extend the 900 mm line further into a nala within Manikonda limits. They said they would convince municipal authorities through higher officials.

Colony president Ravikumar and residents urged GHMC to complete the works quickly.
