Sewage and garbage pile up outside Shaikpet govt school, raise health concerns
HYDERABAD: As schools reopen across Hyderabad, a government high school in Shaikpet is welcoming students back with an unwelcome sight, overflowing sewage mixing with garbage right at its entrance, creating a serious health hazard for children, teachers, and commuters on one of the area’s busiest arterial roads.
Meanwhile, local resident and social activist Maryala Ajay Kumar has been flagging the issue on social media. He told HyderabadMail that the sewage overflow near the school has been going on for over a week. The sewage spills onto nearby garbage collection points, mixing with solid waste and generating a foul stench. Pigs have been spotted in the area, and mosquito breeding is a growing concern.
In addition, the location makes the problem worse. The affected stretch is on the main road connecting Shaikpet, Manikonda, and Narsingi. Thousands of commuters use this busy route every day. Beyond the school, sewage from the Vinayak Nagar area also overflows onto this road, making the situation more severe.
Furthermore, Vinayak Nagar residents say the problem has steadily worsened over the past two years. They submitted a complaint to the HMWSSB. It explains that the area’s drainage pipe is too small to handle the sewage coming from higher ground. As a result, sewage often stagnates at the colony entrance and spills onto the main road. There, it mixes with garbage, creates a foul odor, and attracts pigs and mosquitoes.
Residents say the problem is even more frustrating because officials should have already fixed it. Ajay Kumar says HMWSSB approved Rs 42 lakhs for a sewerage project in the area two to three years ago. However, officials never completed Rs 23 lakhs worth of work, especially the project’s structural parts.
At the same time, Ajay Kumar alleges that the Project DM at the time was Saggam Anantha Laxmi Kumar, a General Manager at HMWSSB. Kumar was recently caught in an Anti-Corruption Bureau raid and faces a Disproportionate Assets case. He was in charge when the project stalled.

Moreover, residents say they repeatedly asked officials about the incomplete project but received no clear answers. “We believe that if the work had been completed, the sewerage problems in our area would have been significantly reduced,” Ajay Kumar said. He added that it is unclear what happened to the public funds for the unfinished project. “That is something we need to look into,” he said.
As a result, Ajay Kumar has urged HMWSSB’s Managing Director to send senior officials, including the DGM and GM, to inspect chronic sewage overflow sites. He wants them to visit Vinayak Nagar, Shaikpet, and similar areas at least once a month.
However, “The DGM and GM rarely come to the field,” he said. He argues that hands-on oversight by senior officials is essential to resolving issues that have persisted for years despite repeated complaints.
His immediate demand is simple: fix the sewage overflow near the government school before students face more health risks. He also wants a permanent solution to the recurring drainage failures in Vinayak Nagar and Shaikpet.
