Fire at Shahalibanda damages historic clock tower

HYDERABAD: A major fire at Gomathi Enterprises in Shahalibanda on Monday night severely damaged the historic Shahalibanda clock tower. The clock stopped at 10.21pm, moments after flames erupted in the electronics showroom and a compressed natural gas (CNG) cylinder exploded. The tall tower, which also serves as a gateway to the compound, sustained structural damage.
Clock tower linked to 18th-century Devdi
The tower stands within an old royal residence known as the Devdi. Historians said a large part of the original palace has been gradually demolished, leaving only the clock tower and a few adjoining structures. The Devdi belonged to the family of Rai Raiyans, the Daftardar (revenue officer) in the court of the third Nizam, Sikandar Jah, between 1795 and 1797.
Built in 1904, the Shahalibanda clock tower also known as the Raja Rai Raiyan Ghadiyal blends European design with local architectural elements. The clock displays time in four scripts: English, Hindi, Roman and Telugu.
Devdi dates back to 1757
The Devdi itself was built in 1757, while the clock tower was added later. The palace originally spanned 2.5 acres and was regarded as one of the finest residences of the princely era. Locals fear restoration of the tower may be delayed due to administrative challenges.
One killed, seven injured
At least one person died and seven others were injured in the accident. Among the injured, four have been identified. Shiva, 49, owner of Gomathi Electronics, has been admitted to Princess Esra Hospital.
