HYDERABAD: The Shadnagar Railway Station, built before Independence, is undergoing a major upgrade under the Centre’s Amrit Kaal initiative. The works, taken up at a cost of ₹9.58 crore, have reached the final stage.

Station upgrade under Amrit Kaal scheme progresses

The station, once lacking basic amenities and long neglected, has now been redesigned with modern facilities. It is among 15 railway stations selected in the state for development under the central government programme.

Facilities expanded with focus on passenger convenience

The redevelopment includes an expanded platform on both sides, a redesigned entrance, waiting halls for VIPs and general passengers, lifts, separate rooms for women, toilets, and a modern train information system. Online ticketing facilities are also in place.

Parking and a park are being developed outside the station, while ATMs have been installed inside for passenger use.

Station sees steady growth in rail connectivity over decades

The station was established in 1942 as a metre-gauge line. Initially, only two trains operated between Hyderabad and Kurnool. Over time, services expanded significantly.

At present, trains connect Shadnagar to Kacheguda and Secunderabad, with further links to Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Tirupati, Bengaluru, Guntur, Goa and Yesvantpur. The line was converted to broad gauge in the 1990s, and a second track was added. Around 48 train trips operate daily.

A large number of employees, teachers and students depend on rail services for daily travel. Despite the increasing traffic over the years, infrastructure expansion had lagged until now.

Most works that began two years ago are complete, with only final-stage tasks remaining.
