Sextortion scam via video call leaves Hyderabad man poorer by ₹3.41 lakh

HYDERABAD: A resident of Gowliguda in Hyderabad lost ₹3,41,950 after falling prey to a sextortion and online payment fraud carried out through video calls and digital payments.
According to the complaint, the incident began on October 5, 2025, around 13.30 IST, when the victim received a call from an unknown woman who identified herself as Jyothi Gupta. During the call, she allegedly attempted to seduce him.
Soon after, the victim received a video call from another person who introduced himself as Vikram Goswami and appeared in a uniform. The caller allegedly threatened to circulate the victim’s recorded video on social media and ruin his reputation.
The complainant stated that he was coerced into making multiple payments on different occasions through Google Pay to an account held in the name of Manjeet Singh. The accused assured him that the matter would be “closed” and the money refunded.
The fraudsters later allegedly hacked the victim’s bank accounts, causing additional losses. They also intimidated him by falsely claiming that the woman involved had died and demanded more money to avoid supposed legal consequences.
Due to fear, social stigma and helplessness, the victim transferred money repeatedly, resulting in a total loss of ₹3,41,950.
Cyber police advisory to public
Cybercrime police have issued an advisory urging citizens not to accept video calls from unknown numbers, particularly those involving indecent content, as such calls are often recorded and used for blackmail.
Police cautioned that law enforcement agencies never demand money over phone or video calls to close cases or prevent circulation of videos. Citizens were advised not to transfer money under fear or pressure, even if the caller claims to be a police officer, official or advocate.
The advisory also warned people against sharing OTPs, bank details or screen access, or clicking on suspicious links, as these can lead to bank account hacking. Victims of threatening or extortion calls were advised to disconnect immediately, block the number and avoid further engagement.
Police said evidence such as call logs, screenshots, payment details and bank statements should be preserved. Cyber frauds should be reported immediately to the national helpline 1930 or through the cybercrime portal.
For emergencies related to cyber fraud, citizens can call or WhatsApp 8712665171. Updates on cyber awareness are available through official social media handles of the Hyderabad cybercrime police.
