Heavy rains in Manikonda cause flooding, leaving residents unsafe

Manikonda Flooding

Manikonda: Severe rains last night, September 30, 2024, caused extensive flooding in Neknampur, submerging entire colonies and resulting in significant property damage. Residents are expressing their frustration over the lack of response from officials despite repeated requests for assistance in clearing the water and preventing further damage.

Concerned citizens are deeply worried about potential electrical hazards, including short circuits and the risk of electrocution as floodwaters continue to rise. Residents are urgently requesting immediate intervention from local authorities due to these dangers.

The admin of the Apna Manikonda social media account (@ManikondaM88292) highlighted the situation on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). A post detailed how the cellar of Bhanu Brijesh Apartment in EVV Colony has been completely submerged, damaging panel boards and parking areas. “Despite our repeated requests, no action has been taken to improve the situation,” the post read, tagging local government officials, including @CollectorRRD.

Further tweets from the Apna Manikonda admin highlighted the dire state of the community. “Severe flooding in Neknampur, Manikonda has left entire colonies underwater, causing distress and damaging property. Immediate action is needed to clear the water and prevent further damage. Please address this urgent situation!”

Residents of Bhanu Brijesh Apartments are particularly anxious, with women and young children facing severe difficulties due to flooding in the cellars. The inundation has made it nearly impossible for residents to enter or exit their homes.

Local resident Sitaram Dhulipala commented, “Urban planning should not be limited to granting building permissions. Authorities must address the serious public concerns regarding inadequate infrastructure that fails to handle heavy rainfall.”

The Citizens Council (@THECCMANIKONDA) conveyed that, stating, “This situation is severely impacting residents, especially women and children. The lack of official response is unacceptable. We urgently need intervention from authorities to prevent further damage and safeguard our community.”

Krishna Chaitanya (@krishna_avs) proposed a long-term solution, suggesting that the public should refrain from directing rooftop rainwater onto roads and instead focus on rainwater harvesting. “@HMWSSBOnline and @GHMCOnline should ensure all buildings have appropriate rainwater harvesting systems and take strict action against those that do not,” he urged.

Another resident, known as Night Owl, shared their experience, stating, “I have lived in Manikonda since 2010. The overflowing of the Pandan stream and flooding in the cellars have occurred four times in the last 14 years. People have become accustomed to this.”

Manikonda residents are urging local authorities to take immediate action to address the flooding crisis and improve urban infrastructure as the community continues to face these challenges.
