HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad railway station is undergoing redevelopment with international standards and airport-style facilities. The South Central Railway began work in 2022 and plans to open the upgraded station by December this year.

About 70 per cent of the work is complete. Officials said construction is being accelerated to meet the deadline without disrupting train operations.

Modern redevelopment aims to handle rising passenger traffic

Secunderabad station, classified under the Non-Suburban Grade-1 (NSG-1) category, handles about 180 trains daily. Nearly 1.60 lakh passengers travel through the station every day.

With increasing passenger numbers and train services, authorities initiated the redevelopment at a cost of ₹714.73 crore. Around 90 per cent of civil works are complete. Lifts have been installed, while escalator construction is ongoing.

Integrated connectivity links rail, metro, and bus terminals

The station is being developed over 1,65,566 square metres. The north and south terminals will each have G+3 floors. Platforms, earlier about 30 feet wide, are being expanded significantly, with new structures on both sides.

Both terminals will include food courts and coffee shops on the first level. The project includes 26 lifts and 32 escalators, along with multi-level parking facilities on both sides.

Passengers will be able to move directly from trains to metro and bus stations through seamless walk-through connectivity, without exiting the station.

Two substations with 5 kilowatt capacity each are being built for power supply. Advanced security systems are also being installed.

The station is designed to handle up to 25,000 passengers per hour initially, with capacity to scale up to 35,000 per hour. Waiting halls with seating for 3,000 people, along with modern canteens and restaurants, will be available after completion.
