Federation of North Eastern Colonies residents demand restoration of public roads in Secunderabad

Secunderabad: Residents of the Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS), commonly known as Green Sainikpuri, have raised concerns over the recent closure of several key public roads in the Secunderabad Cantonment area. The closures, carried out by the Local Military Authorities (LMA), have significantly impacted daily commuters and caused severe hardship for thousands of residents, particularly those living in the northeastern parts of Secunderabad.
FNECS has formally appealed to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to intervene and halt the “illegal” closures, calling for the immediate reopening of these roads to restore free public access.
The closures include the following:
1. Ammuguda Road Closure: Barricades and construction have blocked access to Ammuguda Road near its junction with Yapral Road. This road is a crucial link between Lakdawala Junction (State Highway 1) and northeastern Secunderabad areas like Sainikpuri, ECIL, and others. The blockage is disrupting essential traffic flow and is causing significant inconvenience for daily users.
2. Road Closure Behind Valerian Grammar School/St. Francis Xavier Church and Cemetery:
The LMA has dug up a vital public road behind Valerian Grammar School, St. Francis Xavier Church, and Cemetery in Yapral. This road, shown on the Survey of India map, serves as a key passage for residents of nearby colonies, providing a direct route to other parts of the city. The ongoing construction activities have rendered this road impassable, further complicating travel for the community.
Both closures have been implemented without adherence to the proper legal procedures outlined under Section 258 of the Cantonments Act 2006 and the Standard Operating Procedure for road closure issued by the Ministry of Defence on September 4, 2018 (14(9)/2018-D (Q&C)). As such, FNECS has highlighted that the road closures violate established guidelines and are, therefore, deemed illegal.
The Federation of North Eastern Colonies has urged the Ministry of Defence to take immediate action to resolve the issue, ensuring that the roads are reopened and public access is restored. The affected residents are calling for the government to prioritize the local community’s well-being and address the disruption caused by these closures.
