HYDERABAD: The Union government has approved construction of a four-line railway corridor between Secunderabad and Kazipet at an estimated cost of ₹2,837 crore, marking a major step towards decongesting one of India’s most heavily used rail routes.

According to South Central Railway’s detailed project report, two new lines will be laid alongside the existing double track. The work is expected to be completed in four years. Once operational, the upgraded section will allow 150 additional trains daily, including freight services.

The Secunderabad–Kazipet stretch is a key part of the Highly Utilised Network (HUN) and forms a critical link between north and south India via the Grand Trunk route. Officials said the corridor currently operates at 150% capacity, creating safety and scheduling challenges.

“Even a minor signalling lapse can lead to major risks. Adding two new lines will drastically improve safety and capacity,” an official said.

The project will also facilitate expansion of MMTS Phase-II, as the new tracks between Ghatkesar and Yadadri will integrate seamlessly with the city’s suburban system.

Parallel works are underway to add third and fourth lines on connecting sections — Kazipet–Ballarshah, Kazipet–Vijayawada, and Secunderabad–Wadi. Together, these will form a four-line corridor linking Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Odisha and West Bengal through Hyderabad.

The new lines will be built to handle speeds up to 160 kmph, enabling Vande Bharat trains to run at their full design speed.

The Railway Board cleared the project after a final location survey conducted in July 2023. Land acquisition for 124 hectares has been proposed, covering Medchal–Malkajgiri, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Jangaon and Hanamkonda districts.

The route will include two railway overbridges, 27 underbridges, and 16 stations, including Ghatkesar and Kazipet. Official orders are expected shortly.
