Why Secunderabad Cantonment renamed 21 British-era roads after Indian heroes

HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has approved the renaming of 21 roads and three bazaars, replacing British-era names with those of Indian war heroes, freedom fighters, national leaders and local landmarks, The Hindu reported.

Colonial-era names replaced across Secunderabad Cantonment

A stretch earlier known as Wellington Road near the Army Ordnance Corps (AOC) Centre Chowk in Secunderabad has been renamed Vikram Batra Marg in honour of Captain Vikram Batra, the Kargil War hero. A blue signboard displaying the new name in English, Hindi and Telugu has been installed, according to the report.

Another road near Parade Ground Metro Station, leading towards Bolton Road near Gunrock Enclave, has been named Atal Bihari Vajpayee Road after the former Prime Minister.

SCB Chief Executive Officer Arvind Kumar Dwivedi told The Hindu that the proposals were approved during the board meeting on Wednesday.

“The process of removing the colonial-era names from the existing roads and installing renamed names will be done within a month,” Dwivedi said.

New names honour soldiers and national leaders

Among the major changes, Noble Road will be known as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Road, while Lytton Road has been renamed Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Road.

Protnee Road has been renamed Tarapore Marg after Param Vir Chakra awardee Lt Col A B Tarapore. Richardson Road will become Unnikrishnan Marg in honour of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was killed during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Gough Road will be called Somnath Sharma Marg after India’s first Param Vir Chakra recipient Major Somnath Sharma. Amherst Road has been renamed Abdul Hamid Marg after Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, who was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his role in the 1965 Indo-Pak War.

Burton Road will now be Santosh Babu Road in memory of Colonel B Santosh Babu, who was killed during the Galwan Valley clash in 2020.

Three bazaars renamed in Cantonment area

Other changes include Stewart Road as Lance Naik Ram Chander Marg, Barr Road as Kowkoor Army Road, Wright Road as Vijay Marg, Hislop Road as Kartavya Marg, Byam Road as Paramhamsa Marg and Cornwallis Road as Swamy Vivekananda Marg.

Roberts Road will be renamed Gurbachan Singh Salaria Marg, Empress Road as Veer Nari Marg, Albane Road as Dhan Singh Thapa Marg, Mornington Road as Jadunath Singh Marg, Nickelson Road as Arun Khetarpal Road and Hare Road as Tadbund Temple Road.

In the bazaar areas, Bearers Lines will be renamed Kartavya Nagar, 108 Bazaar will become Infantry Bazaar and RA Pensioners Lines will be known as Artillery Pensioners Lines.
