Rainwater harvesting recharge pits at Secunderabad apartment complex

SECUNDERABAD: Residents of MSK Central Court Apartments in Boiguda have implemented a rainwater harvesting model that has eliminated their dependence on water tankers.

Spread across 6,000 square yards, the apartment complex has 90 flats with a population of about 3,000. Every summer, residents spent lakhs of rupees on water tankers.

27 recharge pits built for permanent water solution

In 2014, residents constructed 27 recharge pits to address water scarcity. These include 23 small pits of 7 feet depth on the ground floor, two large pits of 20 feet depth in the cellar, and two injection bore recharge pits of 200 feet depth at the main entrance.

The system channels rainwater into the ground, improving groundwater levels significantly.

Groundwater improves, tanker costs eliminated

As a result, water levels that were earlier at 500 feet have risen to 200 feet. Residents no longer rely on water tankers, saving substantial costs.

Apartment president G Hanumandlu, joint secretary V Srinivasan, secretary Sethu Madhava Rao, and members Ranganayakamma and Rameswara Rao said they earlier faced severe water shortages during summers. They added that recharge pits resolved the issue and urged others with available space to adopt similar measures.
