Hyderabad: A youth went missing following a fire accident involving two boats at Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad on the night of Sunday, January 26, 2025.

The missing youth, identified as Ajay from Nagaram, spoke to his mother around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, informing her that he was at Tank Bund with his friends and would return home after midnight. However, when she tried calling him at 11:00 p.m., his phone was switched off. At 2:00 a.m., Ajayโ€™s friends contacted the family, saying he was missing.

Ajayโ€™s family and friends visited local hospitals to check if he was among the injured, but after finding no trace of him, they approached the police. They suspect he may have jumped into the lake after a fire broke out on one of the boats.

The police launched a search operation with two teams, including expert swimmers from the Disaster Response Force, to locate Ajay. Authorities are also investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have been triggered by an explosion of firecrackers.

The fire occurred during a fireworks display as part of the ‘Bharat Mata Maha Aarti’ program, organized by the Bharat Mata Foundation at Peopleโ€™s Plaza on Necklace Road. Flames from the crackers fell onto boats carrying additional firecrackers, leading to an explosion. The two boats, operated by the Telangana Tourism Department, were completely destroyed.

Seven people were aboard the boats at the time of the explosion. Three sustained injuries, with one in critical condition and two others suffering minor injuries. The injured individuals, identified as Ganapati (22), K. Sai Chand (20), Chinatala Krishna (47), and Praneet, were rushed to the hospital. Ganapati remains in critical condition at Yashoda Hospital, while the others have been treated at Gandhi Hospital.

The event, which had concluded when the fireworks display began, was attended by Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, and other dignitaries. Firefighters responded quickly to the scene and carried out rescue operations.

Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
