HYDERABAD: Saroornagar police arrested nine persons on May 12, 2026, in connection with an attack on cattle transporters and police personnel in Hyderabad during the intervening night of May 11 and 12.

According to police, the incident took place around 01.45 IST at Kothapet X Road when a group allegedly stopped a DCM vehicle carrying eight bulls and their owners. The animals were reportedly being transported for a film shoot at Purani Haveli in Hyderabad.

Police said the mob suspected that the oxen were being taken for slaughter. The group allegedly restrained the vehicle occupants, abused and assaulted them, and later attacked police personnel who reached the spot after receiving information about the incident.

Stone-pelting reported near Chaitanyapuri U-turn

Police said they shifted the DCM vehicle and the bulls towards a goshala at Fathullaguda for safe custody. While the vehicle was moving near the Chaitanyapuri U-turn, some members of the group allegedly followed it on two-wheelers, overtook the DCM and stopped it on the road.

The accused allegedly pelted stones at the vehicle and the police team escorting it. Several police personnel, including an inspector, sustained injuries in the attack. The DCM vehicle was also damaged, police said.

Case registered under multiple BNS sections

Police brought the situation under control and registered a case under Crime No. 497/2026 under Sections 196(1), 126(2), 118(1), 351(2), 324(5), 121(2), 191(3) read with Section 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The nine accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. Police said efforts are under way to identify and apprehend the remaining accused involved in the incident.

Police officials said seven checkposts have been functioning round the clock across the Malkajgiri Police Commissionerate limits since May 7, 2026.

In a public appeal, police urged citizens to share information related to cattle transportation with authorities instead of taking law into their own hands. Police warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in unlawful activities, attacks on public servants, obstruction of police duties, spreading unrest or disturbing public peace.
