Hyderabad : Indian-American student leader Sarayu Bethamcherla delivered an inspirational address at Columbia University’s graduation ceremony, urging students to be prepared to confront uncomfortable realities and live with peace and harmony in a society where people hold differing views. Her call for students to support one another and stand by the vulnerable drew appreciation from the audience.

Four years of learning and change

Columbia University recently held its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2026 undergraduate students. Sarayu Bethamcherla, Senior Class Council President, delivered the keynote address and reflected on the challenges she faced and the lessons she learned during her four years at the university.

“I witnessed many changes during my time at Columbia. In the beginning, everything felt new. Over time, I came to understand and appreciate the diversity around me. Columbia is like a playground within New York City. Student life here is filled with different experiences and challenges during a formative stage of life,” she said.

Call to support vulnerable communities

Bethamcherla said students should recognise their privileges and stand with those who are vulnerable.

“Columbia University has provided us with the tools needed to confront injustice and solve problems. Let us continue to support one another and build a better future together,” she added.

Telugu roots and leadership journey

Originally from Troy in the US state of Michigan, Sarayu completed her undergraduate studies in Human Rights and Political Science with a specialisation in Urban Studies at Columbia University. She served as President of the Columbia College Student Council Class of 2026 and led several initiatives for fellow students during her tenure.

Her father, Prasad Bethamcherla, hails from Narasaraopet in Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district and moved to the United States in 1998. He founded the Troy Telugu Association for the Telugu diaspora. Sarayu volunteered with the association from a young age, helping develop her leadership skills.
