HYDERABAD: The Telangana government will develop the upcoming Sanathnagar campus of TIMS (Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences and Research) as a dedicated organ transplantation centre.

Eight advanced operation theatres, initially planned at Gandhi Hospital for transplant services, have been completed. The government has now decided to utilise those theatres for Gandhi Hospital’s requirements and shift the organ transplantation centre to TIMS.

Jeevan Daan nodal centre may shift to TIMS

The Jeevan Daan nodal centre for organ donation registration, currently operating under NIMS (Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences), is also likely to be shifted to TIMS. NIMS doctors are continuing as coordinators for the programme. Officials in the health department are working on relocating the nodal centre to the new facility.

Health minister Damodar Raja Narasimha earlier announced that the Sanathnagar TIMS hospital will be inaugurated by Ugadi. While the main hospital buildings are complete, installation of operation theatres, wards, intensive care units and key scanning equipment is under way. The works are expected to be completed by Ugadi.

1,000 beds, 300 ICU units planned

The hospital has been built across 22.6 acres in four blocks. Of the 1,000 beds, 300 are allocated for intensive care units. Around 250 specialist doctors are expected to be available.

Though the hospital has been designed primarily for cardiac research and treatment, it will also be developed as a major centre for all types of organ transplants.

At present, Osmania Hospital and Gandhi Hospital are not conducting transplant surgeries on a full scale. Osmania carries out kidney and liver transplants occasionally, while Gandhi Hospital does not perform them due to the absence of advanced operation theatres and dedicated wards. NIMS currently performs kidney transplants.

Organs retrieved from brain dead patients in government hospitals are being allocated to corporate and private hospitals. With TIMS set to become operational, all major organ transplants are expected to be conducted there under the supervision of specialist teams from Gandhi Hospital, Osmania Hospital and NIMS.
