Sajjapur Chamadumpa Colocasia Tubers With Purple Streaks From Telangana

HYDERABAD: Telangana has moved closer to securing Geographical Indication (GI) status for Sajjapur Chamadumpa (colocasia), as the GI Registry in Chennai has technically accepted its application.

The Telangana Council of Science and Technology (TGCOST) filed the application. This marks a key milestone for the unique colocasia grown in Sajjapur village of Sangareddy district.

Intellectual property expert Subhajit Saha and Professor Pidigam Saidaiah of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University prepared and submitted the application. Saidaiah also led the TGCOST-supported project.

The team documented the crop’s origin, unique traits, biochemical profile, and cultivation methods. They also established its strong link to the region’s geography.

Notably, Sajjapur Chamadumpa is the first colocasia variety to seek GI protection. It has distinct purple streaks on its skin, high dry matter content, and a soft, non-sticky texture after cooking.

Moreover, it has low acridity, which makes it easier to consume. These qualities come from the black cotton soil and the local climate of Sajjapur.

However, technical acceptance is only the first step. The application will now go through detailed examination and publication before final approval.
