Police inspect SUV involved in Saidabad hit-and-run case in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Saidabad police have cracked a hit-and-run case in which a private employee was killed, arresting the accused by posing as a delivery executive and using human intelligence backed by limited technical inputs.

CCTV trail leads police to SUV

The accident occurred at around 12.30 am on Saturday near Green Park Colony Kaman in Champapet. Devarashetti Sunil Kumar, 28, alias Sunny, a resident of Sairam Colony in Saidabad, was returning home on his motorcycle when an SUV rammed him from behind at high speed. The vehicle dragged him along with the bike for nearly 50 metres.

Locals shifted Sunil Kumar to a private hospital, where he died during treatment on Sunday. CCTV footage from the spot did not clearly capture the vehicle details. Police then tracked cameras along the route taken by the SUV and identified the registration number as TS07 JF 3899.

Owner trace fails, police use delivery ploy

According to Regional Transport Authority records, the SUV was registered in the name of Mothuri Venkatesh. Police visited the registered address in Raghavendra Nagar Colony, Hayathnagar, but found that the owner had vacated the premises earlier.

After collecting the phone number through neighbourhood inquiries, the investigating officer called the family posing as a delivery executive, claiming that a parcel addressed to Venkatesh could not be delivered due to an incorrect address. Venkatesh’s daughter shared the location via WhatsApp, enabling police to trace the suspect.

Driver arrested, remanded

Police identified Venkatesh’s son Saicharan as the driver at the time of the accident and arrested him on Monday. Saicharan is a Bachelor of Business Administration student at a city college.

Investigators said Saicharan was heading towards Vanasthalipuram with two friends to drop another friend at the airport, who was scheduled to leave for London early Sunday morning, when the accident occurred.

Saidabad Inspector B. Chandramohan supervised the operation, while Sub-Inspector Gnaneshwar led the investigation. Police said Saicharan would be produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to judicial remand. Action will also be initiated against the other two youths based on findings during the inquiry.
