HYDRAA to intensify crackdown on lake encroachments

Hyderabad: The Telangana government released Rs. 50 crore to the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Tuesday to help the agency meet its expenses.

According to an order issued by Principal Secretary (MA&UD) M Dana Kishore, the funds can be utilized on maintenance of the HYDRAA office, purchase of new vehicles, and paying expenses related to demolitions so far. In the 2024 state budget, the government had allocated Rs 200 crore to the agency created for disaster management and protecting government properties.

Meanwhile, HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath emphasized the need to make strict decisions to protect ponds and nullahs, even if it causes inconvenience to some people. He was speaking at the second conference of Jio Smart India, held at Hitex in Hyderabad.

The agency is identifying ponds in various areas through satellite map data. The encroachments are being identified and removed using the map. The nullahs have been encroached upon, and the interconnectivity between them has been lost, causing wastewater to enter the ponds, he added.
