Rs. 1000 fine imposed on individual for wasting drinking water in Jubilee Hills

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) authorities have imposed a ₹1,000 fine on a resident of Journalist Colony, Jubilee Hills, for wasting drinking water on March 12, 2025. This marks the second such incident in less than two weeks, following a similar case on March 5, when another individual was fined for using drinking water to wash their bike in the same area.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has been taking strict action against the misuse of drinking water, which is meant solely for consumption. In response to multiple complaints from the public, officials have been conducting inspections to ensure that water is not being used for non-essential purposes.
On March 12, General Manager M Hari Shankar and his team visited the Journalist Colony area and caught Yerata Shobha washing her vehicle with drinking water. As a result, a ₹1,000 fine was imposed for violating water usage regulations.
Earlier, on March 5, the HMWSSB Managing Director, Ashok Reddy, noticed a water leakage while traveling from Punjagutta to Jubilee Hills Main Road. Upon investigation, it was found that a person had been washing his bike with drinking water, prompting an immediate fine. The Water Board has reiterated its warning, stating that strict action will be taken against anyone found engaging in similar activities.
The HMWSSB has urged the public to use drinking water responsibly, as the supply is a limited resource, and misusing it can contribute to future shortages. The board supplies 550 million gallons of water daily to the city, serving over 13 lakh connections. Authorities have stressed that using drinking water for purposes like vehicle cleaning, gardening, or washing external areas is prohibited and will result in legal action.
