RGUKT shuts campus temporarily amid protests over student death

HYDERABAD: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) has declared holidays for Pre-University Course (PUC) and engineering students from March 23, following protests over the death of a student.
The decision applies to PUC first and second years, and engineering first and second years. Officials said the move aims to prevent disruption to the academic calendar amid ongoing unrest.
The protests were triggered by the death of Mallipudi Tejashwini, a second-year PUC student from Medak district. She died of leukaemia while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad on March 16.
University authorities said the date for resumption of classes would be announced later. Students were advised to utilise the break productively.
Protests intensify over healthcare concerns on campus
Students began protests on March 17, alleging inadequate medical facilities on campus. They demanded ₹50 lakh compensation for Tejashwini’s family.
Protesters gathered at the Vice-Chancellor’s office and raised slogans seeking justice.
Meanwhile, Tejashwini’s parents staged a sit-in at the RGUKT entrance on Friday. They demanded that the government ensure justice and provide adequate compensation.
Tejashwini, 17, was a resident of Ramachandrapuram in Medak district.
