Telangana: Revanth Reddy consolidates power

Telangana: The Congress has won 70% of seats in the recently declared municipal elections, extending its gains from the panchayat polls where it secured 66% of sarpanch posts.
Party leaders said the results reflect support from both rural and urban voters for the two-year-old government led by Revanth Reddy.
In the Assembly elections, the Congress had performed strongly in rural constituencies. Leaders now say the municipal verdict shows rising support in towns and cities as well.
From simple majority to stability
The Congress formed the government after winning 64 seats in the Assembly elections, securing a simple majority. Leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi had then questioned the stability of the government.
Since then, the Congress has recorded successive electoral victories. It performed well in the Lok Sabha elections and won the Jubilee Hills bypoll. In the panchayat polls, it secured 66% of sarpanch posts. The principal Opposition lost its sitting seat in Jubilee Hills.
Ten MLAs elected on Bharat Rashtra Samithi tickets are now functioning as associate members of the Congress. Party leaders say the string of victories has strengthened the government and ensured stability.
Clear lead across constituencies
Congress leaders said public support has increased compared to the Assembly elections. Panchayat polls were held across 94 Assembly segments, and the Congress secured majority seats in 87 of them.
Municipal elections were conducted across 81 Assembly constituencies. The Congress established clear dominance in 68 constituencies, while all Opposition parties combined made an impact in only 13, party leaders said.
They expressed confidence that similar results would be repeated in the upcoming parishad and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections.
Revanth’s imprint visible
Political analysts said the municipal victory has further strengthened Revanth Reddy’s position. They added that successive wins have enhanced his standing with the party high command, enabling him to take decisions with greater administrative freedom.
Congress won majority municipalities in constituencies represented by the Chief Minister and his ministers. The party also won in Bheemgal, the hometown municipality of Pradesh Congress Committee president Mahesh Kumar Goud, and in Sangareddy, represented by working president Jaggareddy.
Except in Medak, the Congress secured majority municipalities in all Lok Sabha constituencies.
Party leaders said the results reaffirm public backing for the government’s two-year tenure, with no visible anti-incumbency across rural and urban areas.
