CM Revanth Reddy’s brother faces demolition notices over Durgam Cheruvu encroachment

Hyderabad: The Telangana government issued demolition notices on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, targeting several prominent structures, including the residence and office of A. Tirupathi Reddy, brother of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. These actions are part of addressing encroachments around Durgam Cheruvu Lake.
The notices, distributed to properties within the Madhapur Amar Cooperative Society, inform residents that their structures are situated in the Durgam Cheruvu Lake Non-Development Zone (NDZ) and demand that they be removed within 30 days.
Revenue officials, alongside the Ranga Reddy District Collector and Serilingampally Deputy Collector, have issued similar notices to many residents in Nectars Colony, Doctors Colony, Kavuri Hills, and Amar Society, all of which are near the lake. The notices are Issued under Section 23(1) of the WALTA Act, and they require that any encroaching structures be voluntarily demolished within the given timeframe. Non-compliance results in authorities carrying out the demolitions themselves.
The wide distribution of notices has sparked concern among local residents and businesses. On Wednesday alone, hundreds of houses and commercial buildings received notifications.
Durgam Cheruvu, also known as ‘Secret Lake,’ is a well-known landmark in western Hyderabad. Over the years, encroachments have significantly diminished its size, with the lake shrinking from an estimated 100 acres to just 84 acres. Although a preliminary notification designated the area as a Non-Development Zone a decade ago, a final protective notification was never issued, allowing for unchecked encroachments.

There has been illegal construction in the area by several prominent figures, such as judges, political leaders, engineers, and retired bureaucrats. The government’s recent actions are part of a larger effort to reclaim public land and prevent further illegal development around the lake.
