HYDERABAD: The Cyber Crimes police have issued a public advisory cautioning citizens about fraudulent messages circulating online in the name of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), claiming to help trace and recover unclaimed bank deposits.

The advisory notes that genuine claims relating to deposits lying idle for more than ten years can be made only through the RBI’s official portal https://udgam.rbi.org.in.

Fraudsters circulating fake links, say police

According to the communication, cyber fraudsters have begun circulating misleading messages that appear to originate from RBI or commercial banks. Police said people must not click on any links received from unverified sources.

The advisory reiterates that RBI never sends unsolicited links seeking personal information, bank account details or one-time passwords. Citizens have been asked not to share passwords, account numbers or OTPs with any unauthorised person or social media account.

Residents asked to verify with bank branches

People receiving suspicious messages have been urged to visit the nearest bank branch for verification rather than act on unknown links or communications. For authentic updates, users should rely solely on RBI’s official website, https://www.rbi.org.in.

Victims can report to 1930 helpline

Police noted that quick reporting increases the chances of freezing and recovering lost amounts. Victims of cyber fraud can call the national toll-free helpline 1930 or file complaints online at www.cybercrime.gov.in.

“Stay alert. Stay safe. Be cyber smart,” said V Aravind Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crimes, Hyderabad, issuing the advisory.
