Rani Kumudini Telangana's New Election Commissioner

Hyderabad: A retired IAS officer Rani Kumudini has been appointed as new Telangana Election Commissioner for a period of three years. Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on Tuesday issued an order announcing her appointment as the new State Election Commissioner (SEC).

She will replace the outgoing State Election Commissioner C Parthasarathi who was serving an extended tenure of one year from September 8, 2023.

Rani Kumudini is a 1998 batch IAS officer, who has served in various capacities both in State and Central government departments. After completing her Central deputation, she served as the Special Chief Secretary for the Labour, Employment, Training and Factories department. She retired from service in July 2023.

The Senior IAS officer’s name was in the news during the BRS regime. There were reports that the former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao may pick Rani Kumudini or A Shanti Kumari as the Chief Secretary. The BRS government appointed Shanti Kumari as the Chief Secretary as Rani Kumudini had just six months left.

The appointment of the SEC comes ahead of Local body elections in the Telugu state. The polls will likely be held in the next two to three months. Meanwhile, Mahesh Kumar Goud has taken charge as the president of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC). The upcoming elections are being seen as a verdict of Congress’ one-year-rule in the state.
