Kapra Lake closed to Ganesh immersion as HYDRAA moves to protect biodiversity
HYDERABAD: HYDRAA Commissioner A V Ranganath has ruled out Ganesh idol immersion in Kapra Lake this year, citing its ecological importance as an urban wetland and biodiversity habitat.
Ranganath made the announcement during a visit to Kapra Lake to inspect ongoing development works. He also met representatives of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Committee and explained the need to protect the lake’s biodiversity.
He suggested using the baby pond near the lake for immersing small Ganesh idols. He also asked organisers to make alternative arrangements for larger idols.
Kapra Lake recognised as urban wetland
Ranganath said Kapra Lake was more than just a water body. He described it as an important urban wetland that helps maintain the city’s environmental balance.
According to Ranganath, the Central government has recognised Kapra Lake as part of the urban wetlands. He said the lake also attracts more than 470 migratory bird species from different parts of the world, including Australia and Europe.
During his visit, Ranganath viewed a photo exhibition showcasing migratory birds that visit the lake.
He said HYDRAA was developing the 113-acre lake with a focus on environmental conservation. The plans include floodwater storage, groundwater recharge, biodiversity conservation and protection of bird habitats.
Private landowners support restoration
Ranganath said nearly 70% of the lake area consists of private patta lands. He added that the landowners had come forward to support the lake’s development.
Representatives of the Kapra Lake Revival Group also met Ranganath. They urged HYDRAA to take up comprehensive development while protecting the lake’s ecological character.
Ranganath said the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, require authorities to demarcate wetland boundaries, prevent encroachments and control pollution.
He appealed to all stakeholders to cooperate with efforts to protect Kapra Lake’s biodiversity and preserve its ecological functions.
Radhika Gupta, Uppal Zonal Commissioner of Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation; HYDRAA ACP Uma Maheshwar Rao; and Younus Pervez, director of Vimos Technocrats, also attended the visit. Vimos Technocrats is overseeing the lake development works.
