HYDERABAD: The Centre’s PM Surya Ghar–Muft Bijli Yojana is being promoted widely in Ranga Reddy district and Medchal–Malkajgiri district to increase solar power usage. Officials from revenue, electricity and Renewable Energy Development Corporation departments have drawn up a joint action plan.

Two mobile campaign vehicles have been deployed to promote installation of solar plants in multi-storey buildings and gated communities across both districts.

Medchal model drives expansion

Medchal district leads the state in solar power usage. Government offices, staff housing, private engineering colleges and industries in the district are installing solar plants independently, reducing conventional electricity consumption.

Officials plan to replicate this model in constituencies such as Serilingampally, Rajendranagar, LB Nagar and Maheshwaram in Ranga Reddy district, and in Medchal constituency. The focus will be on apartments, gated communities, private educational institutions and hotels.

District Collector C. Narayana Reddy launched the campaign vehicle to promote awareness in Ranga Reddy district.

Awareness on subsidies and savings

Officials are also educating residents about subsidies and benefits. Solar plants with a capacity of 16.16 MW have already been set up in Ranga Reddy district.

A household installing a solar system that generates 360 units per month can significantly reduce electricity bills. A 3 kW solar plant requires about 300 sq ft rooftop space and costs around ₹2.20 lakh, with a subsidy of ₹78,000.
