Cash-for-votes allegations surface in Ranga Reddy municipal polls

HYDERABAD: With campaigning for municipal elections ending on Monday evening, allegations of large-scale inducements to voters have surfaced across Telangana, particularly in Ranga Reddy district. Political circles say cash distribution has intensified ahead of polling scheduled for Tuesday.
Cash flow peaks as polling nears
In several municipalities, candidates are allegedly offering money, liquor, sarees and household items to woo voters. In some wards, rival candidates are said to be competing to outdo each other in distribution. Sources claim that in certain municipalities of Ranga Reddy district, inducements have reached as high as ₹30,000 per vote.
Political observers say the scale of spending in municipal elections is unprecedented, rivalling Assembly and Lok Sabha polls. Candidates are reportedly assuring voters of gold, pensions and other benefits if elected.
Ranga Reddy sees heavy spending
Distribution is said to be particularly intense in Shankarpally, Moinabad and Chevella municipalities. In Shankarpally, some candidates are believed to have spent between ₹6 crore and ₹8 crore, while in Chevella, offers allegedly include half a tola of gold per household. Migrant voters are also reportedly being targeted with inducements.
Across six municipalities in Ranga Reddy district, total election-related expenditure is estimated at around ₹250 crore, according to local sources.
Party funds awaited by candidates
There is also talk that candidates of major political parties are expecting large party funds to arrive by Monday night. Political sources say inducements may peak on Monday night, with polling set to begin at 7 am on Tuesday.
Statewide, campaigning concluded in 110 municipalities and seven municipal corporations. While distribution is reported to have slowed in districts such as Adilabad, Nizamabad and Karimnagar, it is said to be intensifying in Ranga Reddy district.
Election observers and district collectors are said to be reviewing the situation under the supervision of the State Election Commission.
